Raft Building And Last Post Of The Year

On Friday, Rimu class went to Bridal Path for a short hike. The start was kinda hard but it got easier as we went. I liked the hike because of it's amazing views but the thing that I didn't like was how hot it was. I was exhausted by the time we got to the top of the mountain.

After a quick photo we started heading down the other side to go back to the cars. Going down the hill was way easier than going up, but I had to be careful going down because I nearly face-planted. Finally we got to the bottom and started heading to the cars to go to Corsair bay for Raft Building!

Eventually we could put our water proof jackets on and life jackets on and start building our rafts. We had to build our rafts out of rubber tyres and rope. It was really fun making it, but it was way more fun using them in the water. In our groups we had to go to the floating platform in the water and get everyone from our team on the platform.

Have a great Christmas, bye!

Here are some photos from our trip:

Tic Tac Toe DLO

For the past two weeks, the year 7 & 8's have been doing a tic tac toe for our Arthur's Pass Camp. In my slide I have everything that I did for the tic tac toe, I have a 3D map of our lodge made on Minecraft, a picture of a Stoat using Google Drawing and a book about New Zealand Alpine Birds using Storybird.

Hope you enjoy!

Prototec Graph

On the first week of Term 4
Rimu Class have been using Prototec to help us with our maths and we have been recording our results on google drawing. I have been working on Stage Six, I think Stage Six is good for me because it’s not too hard and it’s not too easy. This is important because you will need to use it all the time. You will use maths everywhere like for example if you are sewing you will need to use maths.

If you want to try out Prototec click HERE to have a go!
Here is a picture of my Prototec graph that I made.

A horrible birthday present

Today for 100WC the prompt is   '…as the smoke cleared…' I really like this prompt because it really made me think of what I could do for 100WC. Hope you enjoy my 100WC feel free to leave a positive comment!

I was on a plane to Hawaii. I was feeling uneasy because of how high up we were. I was sitting next my older sister, she was staring out the window. We were going to Hawaii for her birthday I was hoping that this trip would not be a disaster.

All of a sudden, CRASH! I could smell fire and all I could see was smoke.

Finally as the smoke cleared I saw everyone on the ground. I started searching for my sister. Finally I found her, she was still breathing. I picked her up and started looking for shelter...

My amazing speech!

In Rimu class we all created speeches because we were learning how to write persuasively. We performed them in front of the class and were judged by our peers and our teacher and we also self reflected. My speech was called 'We need to make peace, not war'.

I chose this because I don't like seeing bad things like that happen. By watching me present my speech I know that I need to work on speaking louder and slow down while I am speaking. Do you think that we need to make peace, not war? Comment what you think in the comment section below! Hope you like my speech!

Canta Maths!

Canta Maths!

This term Rimu Class had to make a project for Canta Maths. Laura, Bella P, Bella N and I were in a group for the year 7 Team Competition Banner. We created a massive banner that says ‘Y.M.S Canta math 2016’. With our banner we had to make it really big and it had to be maths related, so we added math signs all over it.

Eventually we finished our banner and we realized that we made a massive mess outside. We got paint all over the concrete.

I thought it was difficult working with some of the people in my group because they messed around a lot. If I could do it again I think I would do something different and with different people.

Here is a picture of our gigantic banner:

We won!

We won!

This term Rimu class participated in the Digi Awards. The theme this year was 'Be The Change'. Laura, Hannah, Violet and I did a Digital Sandpit. We used Minecraft for our video; in our video all of us has one bit in the video. We all explain what we want the change in the world to be. My one was people paying it forward, I show people being kind to one another and 'paying it forward'.

After we entered the competition we got an email from the Digi Awards people and it said that we won a prize. So we were either 3rd, 2nd or 1st! We were all so excited on the night of the event. After a while of watching and clapping it was finally our turn. We waited 'till our school name got called out. Finally our name was called out and were FIRST! We were all so happy.

I learned how to record screens on my computer for the video, it was hard at the start but eventually I got the hang of it. If I could do it again, I would make it a lot less cheesy. But at least our really cheesy video came first! Here is the amazing video that we made! Hope you enjoy.

100WC TM3 WK 1

Sorry that this 100WC is late I forgot that I need to publish it, but here it is hope you like it! For the 100WC the prompt is:

  • Where is this magical place?
  • How did you get there?
  • What are you doing there?
  • Is a dangerous place or place for fun?

Beside the sea was me and my friends getting ready to surf, we were all excited to catch some big waves. I was swimming out to get to some bigger waves.

I was doing well I was getting dragged down. I couldn’t see anything, I could only see a massive hole. I was so deep that I could see a new world beneath my feet.

OW! I landed on my back. I got up and looked around, lots of strange looking things were staring at me. They were all talking to each other quietly, and that’s when the adventure begins.

My Time Table Term 3

It is finally Term 3! Here is my Time Table for Term 3. You can see my goals at the top. I want to work hard to make sure I'm following my timetable and making sure I am reading other people's blog posts and commenting properly. It is good to practise my writing like that. This term I am looking forward to moving up in my Maths!

Haiku Poem!

On Monday Rimu went to the Port Hills and did a hike, a very exhausting hike, but I still enjoyed it. So the people who went on the hike had to make a Haiku poem about our hiking trip. Here is a slide with my poem and some pictures, hope you enjoy!

100WC Week 9

This week our 100WC is:
Things to consider:
  • Why would you be put in this cell?
  • How does it feel to be locked up?
  • Is it possible to escape? Could you think of a plan?
  • What is special about Alcatraz?
And this is a picture that came with our prompt:

Finally I'm awake, I feel dizzy, I must of passed out. I stood up. I'm starting to see clearer, I look around and see that I'm not at home. I seem to be in a cell, in a prison. But why would I be in prison? Where am I?  I would never do anything bad to get into prison in the first place.

I don't know how I could escape, I start searching my cell but I can't find a way to escape. I felt really dizzy , I fell to the floor and passed out instantly.

Rock Climbing Adventure!

This week our writing focus was to use more interesting ways of starting our sentences. This will hopefully make our writing more interesting!

It was finally the 20th of June, I have been waiting a long time for this date to come. It was the day for the year 7’s and 8’s to go rock climbing at Cattlestop Crag! I was so excited to go rock climbing. We were all excited because it counted towards our William Pike Challenge.

Finally when everybody arrived to school we could set off to the Port Hills to have some fun rock climbing. When we arrived, we met our rock climbing teachers, Steven and Josh. After a long lecture about keeping safe while climbing, we put our helmets on and our harnesses and we were set to go climbing! The two values we were focusing on was pride and resilience. IMG_0719.JPG

I started on the easiest wall that was there, I went first. On my first go I got half way up but then I got down. When I got back on the ground I wanted to go back up but I had to wait to have my next turn. So instead of just sitting there waiting for my next go, I helped Miss Blair with the belaying.

IMG_0694.JPG

When it was my turn to go rock climbing again I got all the way to the top! I was very proud of myself. After that my last thing I had to do was the abseiling. I went first in my group, as I looked over the edge of the rock I froze, but eventually I started walking down the wall. When I finally got back on the ground I wanted to go back up there and do it again, but unfortunately I could only have one turn.

Finally it was time to hop back in the car and go back to school. I really had a great time rock climbing and I really want to go back up there to enjoy the view again.

Air Force Museum Response

On week 7 Rimu went to the Air Force Museum to learn about the ANZACS. I really enjoyed it there, my favourite part was going into the simulator room. To thank our teacher who taught us about the ANZACS we all made something to thank him. I made a card, here are some pictures of the card I made:

Hero Projects!

In the past few weeks Rimu has been making little match box projects. Inside are some facts about the person who we chose. We all had to choose someone from New Zealand, I chose Kelly Tarlton because I thought he was very interesting because he found lots of treasure, even Captain Cooks Anchor!

We all could decorate our match boxes the way we wanted to, I just went for a simple green box.
Here is a picture of my match box:

100WC Week 7

This week for our 100WC we had to include these five words: Violin,    Eaten,    Yellow,    Airplane,    Swept. I will underline where I used these words.

One day, I was practicing my violen. I was starting to get a bit peckish so I went into my kitchen and got a yellow banana from my fruit bowl.

I thought to  myself, after I've eaten this I should see if there are any flights to Fiji because I needed a vacation. So I got on my computer and bought some tickets to Fiji!

After that, the week swept away and I was in first class, on the plane, on my way to Fiji. I was so excited, I just couldn't wait until the airplane landed.

Maths

This week our maths focus is prime numbers and factors. On one of our math lessons we had to pick a number and try and make a rectangle with cubes and see how many rectangles we could make with our number. I picked five and I could only make one rectangle because I picked an odd number, but Hannah picked ten so she could make more than one. Now I know what factors are!

100WC Week 5

This week our 100WC prompt is a picture of a man sitting on a bench sitting next to a bronze statue, and we had to make a story about where they have been? Where are they going? Are they together? Here is my 100WC!

I saw a man sitting on a bench talking. I don’t know if he was talking to himself, for all I knew he was crazy. I didn’t see anyone near so he must be talking to the bronze statue beside him. I asked if he was ok and he said
“I’m just talking to me ol’ friend Bob. Why don’t you introduce yourself?”
I turned around to talk to the man he called Bob and thought for a moment, trying to figure out what I should say to ‘Bob’.
“Hi there, Bob. Nice to meet you, I really must be going. Goodbye!”

And I ran away.

100WC No.2

The new topic for the 100WC has came in so of course we have already started writing it. I have finished mine today which is an achievement for me. I think it's always gonna be hard to write only 100 words. Here is the next 100WC. Hope you like it!

The Ghost who hated light.

I was sitting in my little pink bedroom reading, with a candle. I was supposed to be asleep, but I wasn't. All of a sudden my candle flickered and went out, I looked around my room. As I was looking around I saw that my curtains were glowing, so I went over to see what was making it glow. There was a girl, she was a ghost and she said, "I used to live in this house, my room caught on fire from just one candle, I couldn't escape and no one saw me again." And she disappeared.

My Diary Entries For My Reading.

These are my two diary entries for my reading. This is part of my ANZAC reading activities.
A diary is a record with different entries arranged by date reporting on what has happened over the course of a day.

Hope you enjoy!

Day One
Dear Diary,

I was just standing there looking at all of the men suffering on the beds, blood everywhere. Men coming in every minute. I couldn’t stand it, all the injuries were serious and bloody. I hated it, but I had to save them.

and...

Day Two
Dear Diary,

Another day of men suffering. Still more and more men coming in, the building was full of sick and injured men. I couldn’t believe my eyes with some of the things I saw. So much medicine, it was difficult to help all of these people. But as I keep telling myself, I’ve got to help save these men.

100WC

My class is participating in the 100 Word Challenge, it is really difficult to write just 100 words, I wish we could write more than 100 words. Here is my story:

There was a girl who was just having a stroll in a forest and all of a sudden she found a staircase, it seemed to be leading up to the sky. She started walking up the steps and half an hour later she was at the top.

There were lots and lots of lollies. There were people there eating lots of sweets. So the girl joined in and made loads of new friends. It was time for her to leave so she walked down the steps but then she slipped and fell and then she woke up from a dream.

Is my holiday story True or False?

True or False?

On the first day back at school in Term 2 we all had to write a story about our holiday and it had to be True or False, and here is what I wrote:

On the weekend before the holidays started, my dad, my Aunty and I drove to the Kingsford Kitchen in Rangiora for brunch, for my Grandad’s birthday. We were early so we waited outside in the carpark for my Grandad and my Grandma to come.

Finally when everybody was sitting down at the table we got our menus and looked through them to see what we could get. Obviously I got a kids menu so I didn’t have much of a choice, I wanted the pancakes but I chose the chicken burger instead because I usually have pancakes if I have brunch.

After a while we finally got our food, but I didn’t finish all of it so my dad finished it for me, but it was still very delicious, especially the fries I got with it.

After we all finished eating we all went outside and said our goodbyes and got in our cars and drove home. I enjoyed it and I definitely want to go there again and try their pancakes and maybe bring some of my friends with me. On the drive back home I saw lots of the countryside, it was beautiful. I really enjoyed spending time with my family, and I hope I can do it another time.

So do you think my story is True or do you think my story is False? Please leave what you think in the comments!

Top Ten Ways To Look After Your Chromebook!

Top Ten Ways To Look After Your Chromebook!

At Y.M.S we are all very lucky because we all get our own chromebooks, so of course we all have to know how to look after them. So Rimu Class got into their own groups and we all made our own movies with the ipads on imovie.

My group decided to base the theme on 3 News, so we drew on a whiteboard 3 News!

For some reason when I watch the bits with me in it I just cringe. It make me cringe so much but when we showed the class it seemed like everyone thought it was funny so I guess that made me feel a bit better.

I really enjoyed making the movie but the thing I thought was challenging was when we didn’t really agree with things.

Here is the video:

Surfing at Sumner beach!

On Monday the 21st March the Year 7 and 8's from Rimu Class went surfing at Sumner Beach as our first challenge for the William Pike Challenge Award, while we were gone the year 6's stayed at school and just had a normal school day. Some of the parents drove us in their cars to sumner beach. My mum came surfing with us but she didn't actually surf but she came to watch. She took Bella N, Laura and I in her car, which I was really happy about.

I thought it would be quite hard and I was right it was hard but after a little bit of practice it got pretty easy. I found getting up on the board quite hard, but once I practiced getting up it became easier by the minute. My friends and I were cheering for each other but sometimes they accidentally fell off, which was pretty funny.
I learnt that my friends enjoyed surfing apart from all of the salt water getting into our mouths.

Everyone was giving it a go and we all did really well even if we fell of the surf boards a lot. If I ever go surfing again I will practice the 'cat,' movement and to keep my feet straight forward. But I also have to remember to be aware of other surfers too and to not get in their way while they are on a wave.

Here is a picture of me at Sumner beach:

Here is my senses poem:

Prudence’s Senses Poem

I could smell the strong salty air.
I could smell the disgusting smell of the wet dogs.

I could see the public looking at us.
I could see the big waves pushing people all over the place.

I could taste the salty water as I got pushed under the water by the strong waves.
I could taste my salty apple at break.

I could hear the waves coming up to shore.
I could hear the seagulls squawking at me for more food.

I could feel the foamy water pushing against me.
I could feel seaweed running across my feet as I go deeper into the sea.

The William Pike Challenge Award Recount!

On Tuesday, it was meet the teacher night, the whole class cooked dinner for all the parents, all the children and for William Pike. William Pike was here because he was telling us what happened to him, we needed to know because the year seven and eights are participating in the William Pike Challenge Award.

After we all finished having dinner we all headed to the Wharehui where we learnt about what happened to William Pike. It was so interesting learning about William Pike’s leg. Looking at the picture of his leg when he was in hospital was so disgusting but cool at the same time, but I reckon it would really hurt.

Near the end of William Pike’s talk he asked one of the student’s to come up to take off his leg and clean it. William picked Jacob and I must say he was pretty confident about cleaning his leg. After Jacob finished cleaning William’s leg he got one of his books and William Pike signed the book to. I had such a good night, apart from all the rain, it was so awesome learning about William Pike.

'Wonder' Point of view writing

Our writing task last week was to write a short essay explaining what point of view R.J Palacio used when writing ‘Wonder’. We also had to find examples from the text, also I found quotes to back up what we thought. It had to have an introduction, 3 example paragraphs and lastly a conclusion. I’m really enjoying the book, this book is way more interesting than the book my teacher read last year. Here is my short essay about ‘Wonder’.

‘Wonder’ is a story about a boy who feels ordinary on the inside, but he is always reminded of how different he is by how people respond when they see him. This is R.J Palacio’s first novel and it is written in the first person.

August is speaking in first person because at the start of the book he says,
“I know I’m no ordinary 10 year old I mean sure I do normal things like eat ice-cream, I ride my bike, I play ball and I have a Xbox, stuff like that makes me ordinary.

August is speaking in first person because at the start of the book he says, “If I found a magic lamp and had one wish I would wish that I had a normal face.”
August is speaking in first person because at the start of the book he says, “But I know other ordinary kids don’t make other ordinary kids run away screaming in the playground.”

Therefore, I think that Palacio has used the first person point of view in her story ‘Wonder’.

My visual mihimihi

In the first two weeks of school, Rimu class learnt how to write and create a visual mihimihi. We also made a video of our visual mihimihi, but before we started making the video, we had to make sure that we could say the Māori words correctly. It was very hard to find an Ipad that was free because everybody else was using them. Each visual mihimihi had to have 3 parts to it:

  1. A photo or self portrait.
  2. Things that are important to us.
  3. Symbols or picture that represents our culture.

Here is a video of my visual mihimihi:
